"PRESIDENT'S DESK"

Friends of the Milton Public Library President - Dennis J. Hughes

Dennis J. Hughes - President

Dear Friends,

Chartered in 1988, the Friends of the Milton Public Library is a non-profit organization committed to endorsing the Library's mission statement by enriching the total resources and facilities of Milton Public Library.

The Friends of the Milton Public Library has actively supported the Library with fundraising and cultural activities such as art shows, author book signings, book fairs, sales of promotional and historical items.  Monies raised from these activities have provided additional funds to enhance the services and programs provided by the Library.  For a number of years the Friends have purchased a bicycle and helmet for a child registered in the Summer Library Reading Program.  We have put twinkles in the eyes and grins on the faces of many children, who, to their credit, were reading during the summer!

In 2000 the Friends accepted a challenge to help get an addition to the Library off the ground, literally.  We raised $400,000 through grants and donations.   We are very pleased with our efforts, very grateful to foundations and individuals who donated money, and very proud of our library staff. The Town of Milton have greatly benefited from the increased size and capability afforded by the addition.  The Friends' work is not completed.  Our ongoing mission is to serve and support Milton Public Library.

As the president of the Friends of the Milton Public Library, I am hopeful that our town library will continue to be a safe and busy hub of activity for children and adults; that it will be able to offer our community all the resources available in any other town library; that it will meet the demands for growing technology in our society; that it will be a center of learning for school children and adults from multicultural backgrounds; and that it will still be a lending library for people of all ages who want to engage in good old-fashioned reading for pleasure.

You are invited and welcome to join our organization and attend our meetings.  Membership is open to any individual, student,  family, business, or group interested in the objectives of the Friends.  Meetings are held bi-monthly, currently at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesdays.  See you then!
